Foundation
The foundation is one of the most critical elements of any timber building. Whether you are building a compact garden cabin or a large residential structure, the right base is essential for structural integrity, longevity, and to avoid costly problems later. An uneven or inadequate foundation makes proper assembly difficult and can cause long-term structural damage.
The proper foundation ensures even distribution of the building's weight, equal settlement, and prevents subsoil movement. Choose the most suitable option for your site and building – do not compromise quality for cost savings on this critical element.
Before laying the foundation
- Evaluate the ground condition: Assess the site and ground type to determine the most appropriate foundation.
- Double-check the measurements: Confirm that foundation dimensions exactly match the floor bearer dimensions of your chosen building before construction begins.
- Select the foundation type: Based on building size, ground type, and budget.
Foundation types
Concrete base foundation
The most robust and recommended foundation for most buildings. Provides exceptional stability and a perfectly even construction base. Minimum recommended depth: 150–300 mm. The concrete must be fully cured before building assembly begins.

Concrete slabs
A cost-effective option, particularly suitable where the ground is already relatively level. Adjustable pedestals can be used beneath the slabs to correct minor unevenness. Suitable for garden buildings and smaller residential structures.

Timber frame foundation
The most cost-efficient foundation option, using a timber frame placed beneath the building. Suitable for compact garden buildings and, in some cases, residential structures. Available as an additional service from our team.

Mobile home foundation
A specific foundation system designed for mobile-home-classified structures (granny annexes). Consists of two separable parts that can be raised by crane, allowing the structure to be relocated if required. A foundation pallet (supplied by us) or timber frame foundation should be used for mobile homes to ensure the legal definition of mobility is maintained.

Preparing the base for construction
Ensure your concrete foundation is completely dry and fully cured before beginning building assembly. If the site is exposed to rain before or during construction, wait until the base is completely dry. Assembling on a damp foundation risks moisture damage and mould to the base logs. If moisture has entered, ventilate the building thoroughly before and after assembly.
